The secret to a perfect laser engraving isn't just in the design—it’s in the focus.

In this second installment of our G2 Pro series, we will walk you through the essential techniques for focusing and positioning your workpiece to ensure professional results every time.

Understanding Your Focal Length

The G2 Pro uses a 1064nm wavelength fiber laser. The beam must converge at a specific point on your material's surface to achieve maximum energy density.

💡 Pro Tip: Focal length is measured from the bottom of the field lens to the top surface of your material.

Focal Length Ruler: When the bottom of the pointer points to 0, the distance between 0 and the workbench is the focal length of this machine. If the thickness of the material you need to engrave is 8 millimeters, adjust the pointer to 8 millimeters, and then proceed with the engraving.
Note: Please read the value from the bottom of the pointer.

The "Double Red Dot" Method

This is the easiest way to focus. The G2 Pro features dual red light indicators that converge when the correct height is reached.

  • Place your material on the workbench.
  • Observe the red dots on the surface of your object.
  • Adjust the height using the knob on the lifting stand.

Using the Manual Pointer (Precise Measurement)

For those who prefer a more mechanical approach or are working with specific material thicknesses, the G2 Pro includes a physical mounting pointer for calibration.

Use double-sided tape to attach the pointer to the L-shaped support plate.

How it works

When the tip of the pointer aligns with "0" on the scale, the lens is exactly at the default focal length distance.

📏 Material Offset Adjustment

If you are engraving a piece that is 8mm thick, simply adjust the stand height until the pointer reads "8mm" on the scale. This automatically accounts for the material's height without needing to refocus.

Precision Positioning (F1)

Use the G-LASER software to ensure your design hits the mark every time.

Center Point Indicator (F1)

Projects a red light showing the center and boundary of your pattern without emitting the laser.

Red Outline

Traces the graphic’s boundary so you can physically align the object before marking (F2).

Locating Plates

Screw the L-shaped plates into the workbench to create a "jig" for fast batch processing.

Advanced: Handheld and Angular Engraving

One of the G2 Pro's unique features is its flexibility for objects that don't fit on the stand.

You can hold the laser source handle directly to aim at large or immovable objects that exceed the height limits of the stand. Perfect for automotive parts or heavy machinery.

By loosening the fixing nut and angle adjusting nut, you can tilt the main engine to engrave on slanted or vertical surfaces, expanding your creative possibilities.

1. 20W vs 30W vs 50W: Which power level should I choose for my business?
Choosing the right wattage depends on your production goals:
  • 20W: Best for high-precision jewelry engraving, thin metal marking, and Stainless Steel Color Marking.
  • 30W: The "Sweet Spot." It balances speed and depth, making it ideal for most gift customization shops and small businesses.
  • 50W: The Industrial Powerhouse. Essential for Deep Metal Engraving (molds, stamps), thick metal cutting, and high-volume industrial production lines where speed is money.
2. Why is my engraving uneven even after I’ve focused the laser?
Fiber lasers have a very narrow "Depth of Field." This issue usually stems from two factors:
  • Surface Irregularity: Even a 1-2mm tilt in your material can cause the laser to go out of focus. Always use a spirit level for critical jobs.
  • Field Lens Limits: If you are using the 150x150mm lens, energy can slightly dissipate at the extreme edges. For maximum consistency on large designs, try to center your work under the lens.
3. Can the G2 Pro engrave plastics without burning them?
Yes! The G2 Pro’s 1064nm pulsed laser is perfect for dark-colored plastics (ABS, PC, PA). Unlike CO2 lasers that burn through heat, fiber lasers create a chemical "foaming" or color change on the surface. This results in a clean, high-contrast mark with no smoke and no melted edges.

Pro Tip: Use lower frequency settings to achieve a darker, crisper mark on white or grey plastics.
4. How do I ensure 100% precision when using Handheld Mode?
Maintaining the exact focal distance (211mm or 261mm) while holding the laser by hand can be challenging. We recommend creating a DIY "Focal Jig"—a lightweight rod cut to the exact length of your focal distance.

Simply touch the rod to the surface to set your distance, remove it, and fire the laser. This ensures industrial-grade precision even when you're off the stand.
